Tumble dryers continuously draw in the ambient air around them and heat it before passing it through the tumbler. The resulting hot, humid air is usually vented outside to make room for more air to continue the drying process. Tumble dryers are sometimes integrated with a washing machine, in the form of washer-dryer combos, which are essentially a front loading washing machine with an integrated dryer or (in the US) a laundry center, which stacks the dryer on top of the washer and integrates the controls for both machines into a single control panel.

Air fryers don't actually fry. Instead, the food goes into a perforated basket, and the machine cooks it by blowing hot air around it. The force of the air produces a convection effect that cooks and browns the exterior of the food in the basket. As long as the air temperature reaches more than 320 F, breaded foods like frozen chicken tenders or unbreaded starchy items like french fries or tater tots will, in fact, turn brown.

A century ago, cupboards, cabinets, or closets were used to store everyday items. They were known as cold pantries or larders. Food items such as bread, butter, cheese, and eggs, as well as fruits and vegetables, were brought up from the root cellar in small amounts to the kitchen. A root cellar is a storage area that uses the natural cooling properties of the earth. Cold pantries were made of metal or wood grates to draw up cold air from below the house. The main difference between a root cellar and a cold pantry is humidity. While a cold pantry keeps food dry, a root cellar allows some moisture to help preserve the produce stored there.

A microwave oven (commonly referred to as a microwave) is an electric oven that heats and cooks food by exposing it to electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range. This induces polar molecules in the food to rotate and produce thermal energy in a process known as dielectric heating. American engineer Percy Spencer is generally credited with inventing the modern microwave oven after World War II from radar technology developed during the war.

In 1964, the Ramsey Feed Company of Rose Hill created the ultimate tribute to the area’s poultry industry by building the world’s largest frying pan. This 15-foot-wide behemoth can be found a short drive off Interstate 40. On most afternoons, this destination is little more than a novelty, and the pan itself isn’t well displayed because it is covered to protect it from the elements. Perhaps the best time to see the pan in action each year is at the North Carolina Poultry Jubilee held each fall, which includes a food festival featuring chicken cooked in the pan.

Tired of drinking weak and stale office coffee, John Sylvan and Peter Dragone began experimenting with creating a single-serve machine that could simply and consistently deliver the perfect cup of coffee. They named their brewing system and their company “Keurig”, a word derived from the Dutch word for excellence, and designated each single-serve coffee capsule as a “K-Cup® pod.” After a few years of exclusively targeting sales to offices, Keurig, Inc. executives decided to make this revolutionary brewing system available on kitchen counters. Keurig worked to develop a home model of the brewer that could successfully compete with other single-serve coffee systems offered by competitors. In 2003, Keurig® brewers and K-Cup® pods were made available in high-end department stores, targeting consumers looking for a no-mess approach to brewing coffee, one that could be done from the comfort of their own homes with just one touch of a button.

Kelvinator was an American home appliance manufacturer and a line of domestic refrigerators that was the namesake of the company. Although as a company it is now defunct, the name still exists as a brand name owned by Electrolux AB. It takes its name from William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, who developed the concept of absolute zero and for whom the Kelvin temperature scale is named. The name was thought appropriate for a company that manufactured ice boxes and refrigerators. Kelvinator was founded on September 18, 1914, in Detroit, Michigan, United States, by engineer Nathaniel B. Air conditioning’s first application was in the print industry, for a company in Brooklyn, NY, called Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Printing Company. As the humidity in their facilities fluctuated, the paper they used would expand and contract, making the printing process less precise, more difficult, and much slower. Enter a man named Willis Carrier. Carrier began experimenting with electrical air conditioning as a method of preventing some of the problems that came along with summertime humidity and high temperatures for printing companies. Essentially, he found that blowing air over a set of coils, which are filled with coolant, would pull much of the moisture out of the air. This reduction in humidity was a success for the printing company, but the full application of "air conditioning" was yet to be seen.
