Polar lights (aurora polaris) are a natural phenomenon found in both the northern and southern hemispheres that can be truly awe-inspiring. Northern lights are also called by their scientific name, aurora borealis, and southern lights are called aurora australis. They are more frequent at higher latitudes and places like Alaska, Canada, and Antarctica, closer to the Earth’s poles. Occasionally, they have been seen closer to the equator, and even as far south as Mexico. To view them, look in the direction of the closest pole (the northern horizon in the northern hemisphere, the southern horizon in the southern hemisphere). In some areas, such as Alaska or Greenland, they may be visible most nights of the year. And they occur at any time of the day, but we can’t see them with the naked eye unless it’s dark.

The State Motto that appears on the State Seal of California is the Greek word Eureka – which means "I have found it!" These famous words were supposed to have been uttered by the ancient Greek scientist Archimedes (c. 287-212 B.C.E.) when conducting an experiment to measure the specific gravity of gold. During the 1849 California State Constitutional Convention at Monterey, the delegates had to agree upon a design for the Great Seal of California, which included a representative motto. They were following the tradition adopted by other states. Since the seal's design included a gold miner, it seemed most fitting to the delegates to adopt this phrase as the State Motto. "Eureka" became the official State Motto in 1963.

Alaska's gold rush began in 1896-97 when gold was discovered in the Klondike in Canada's Yukon Territory. Lured by the hopes of quick riches, thousands of prospectors streamed through the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, demanding goods and services. With the best gold fields claimed by 1898, many began searching in Alaska. Major strikes occurred in Nome in 1898 and near Fairbanks in 1902. Most of these stampeders did not get rich, but a good number decided to stay in Alaska afterward, quickly transforming its population.
