13 colonies initially drafted and ratified the United States Constitution. Those turned into the first 13 states of the U.S. – Delaware Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North and South Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. This process took from 1787 to 1790. Vermont was the next one to join, and did so in 1791, followed by Kentucky and Tennessee before the turn of the century. By 1850, the U.S. had 31 states, with California having joined that year. In 1900, it counted 45 states, the last addition being Utah in 1896. Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Mexico joined by 1912, completing the lower 48. It wasn’t until 1959 that Alaska and Hawaii became U.S. states. The idea to establish Alaska as a state was rejected by many in Congress at first, given the large-scale exploitation of Alaskan natural resources that an independent state could have sought to regulate.

Hawaii may have been named for Hawai’i Loa, a legendary figure who is said to have first discovered the islands. Hawaii’s nickname, the Aloha State, is no mystery: Aloha is a Hawaiian way to say hello and goodbye. Hawaii is the world’s largest island chain, and it’s the only U.S. state completely made up of islands. But only 7 of its 132 islands are inhabited: Hawaii (also known as the Big Island), Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau.

California’s State Animal is the California grizzly bear. As the state’s largest and fiercest predator, the grizzly had California to itself for hundreds of thousands of years. The loss of habitat and overhunting by a rapidly growing human population led to their complete extinction by the 1920s. In 1953, the California grizzly became the official State Animal and remains one of the state’s most enduring and visible symbols. Notably, California is the only state in the union that carries the image of an extinct animal on its state flag and seal.

Big Idaho Potato Hotel is exactly what it says on the tin: a six-ton Russet Burbank potato, of the type that’s famously grown in Idaho, transformed into a romantic rural getaway for two. Crafted from steel, plaster, and concrete, the 28-foot-long tater has been recycled from the Big Potato Tour, hosted by the Idaho Potato Commission (yes, there is such a place!) After spending many faithful years traveling across the US, the potato has since been lovingly made over by friendly owner Kristie – a proud Idaho native, and a former Big Potato Tour spokesperson.

The 4 U.S. capital cities named for presidents played integral roles in shaping the nation, and in their names carry the banner for a few of the early leaders of the country. Named in honor of Major General Andrew Jackson, the seventh U.S. president, Jackson is the largest and most populated city in Mississippi. When Nebraska became a state in 1867, state officials changed the state capital from Omaha to Lancaster, and named the new capital Lincoln in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Missouri state legislators created the state’s capital in 1821 and named it Jefferson City after President Thomas Jefferson, who served as president between 1801 and 1809. The streets of Madison, WI, are named for the signers of the U.S. Constitution and the city was named in honor of the fourth U.S. president, James Madison.
