In American films of the Western genre between the 1920s and the 1940s, white hats were often worn by heroes and black hats by villains to symbolize the contrast between good and evil. The 1903 short film The Great Train Robbery was one of the first to apply this convention. Two exceptions to the convention were portrayals by William Boyd (active 1918–1954), who wore dark clothing as Hopalong Cassidy, and Robert Taylor's portrayal in the film The Law and Jake Wade (1958).

“Spaghetti” Westerns are a subgenre of Westerns whose name references the circumstances and location of their filming. Generally, a Spaghetti Western is a low-budget film produced by Italian directors (hence the “spaghetti” connection) and filmed in Europe, primarily in Almería and the Tabernas Desert. Unconstrained by Hollywood’s film regulations (and, in particular, the Hays code which restricted film content at the time), Spaghetti Westerns are far more cynical and violent compared to their contemporary Hollywood cousins.

John Wayne's first lead role in "The Big Trail" was supposed to be his big break - but it set him back nearly a decade. While trying to find his way in the movie business, Wayne spent his early days making uncredited acting appearances or being a prop man. A then 23-year-old Wayne was cast by Raoul Walsh (White Heat) to be the lead in his 1930 widescreen epic "The Big Trail". This saw Wayne's Coleman leading a group of settlers along the Oregon Trail, and he finds love and adventure during the trip. There are conflicting accounts about how the relatively unknown Wayne was cast, though the accepted version is that Walsh—who was having trouble casting the lead—saw Wayne lifting furniture and decided to screen-test him. "The Big Trail" was an expensive Western epic, but it wasn't the box-office success it was predicted to be.

Bass Reeves (July 1838 – January 12, 1910) was a former slave turned American law enforcement official, historically noted as the first black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River. Historian Art Burton has said that Reeves was the inspiration for the character of the Lone Ranger. Burton makes this argument based on the sheer number of people Reeves arrested without taking any serious injury, coupled with the fact that many of these arrested were incarcerated in the Detroit House of Correction, the same city where the Lone Ranger radio plays were broadcast on WXYZ.

With its steely-eyed showdowns, red-sashed antagonists, quirky characters, and rolling subplots, Tombstone has all the makings of a good Western tale. As a bonus, the storyline is more or less based on real events that took place in southeastern Arizona in the early 1880s. In 1877, prospector Ed Schieffelin went out into the hills of southern Arizona intent on finding silver, despite warnings from literally everyone around him. He eventually found it without being killed by local Apache groups or succumbing to the brutal heat of the southwest. In short order, his mining claim spawned others in the area, and eventually, the boomtown of Tombstone, which quickly gained a reputation for being a dope place to mine and gamble and vibe out in the desert.
