A group of crows is called a murder. There are several different explanations for the origin of this term, mostly based on old folk tales and superstitions. For instance, there is a folktale that crows will gather and decide the capital fate of another crow. Many view the appearance of crows as an omen of death because ravens and crows are scavengers and are generally associated with dead bodies, battlefields, and cemeteries, and they’re thought to circle in large numbers above sites where animals or people are expected to soon die. But the term “murder of crows” mostly reflects a time when groupings of many animals had colorful and poetic names. Other fun examples of “group” names include an ostentation of peacocks, a parliament of owls, a knot frogs, and a skulk of foxes.

The phrase 'Cat Got Your Tongue' is used to describe when someone is at a loss for words or is unusually quiet. The origin of the idiom is an intriguing one. Although many believe the “cat” in question is of the feline variety, it’s actually the cat o’ nine tails, a whip commonly used to flog sailors who misbehaved. On English sailing ships, anyone entrusted with a secret by a higher officer would be threatened with “the cat” for telling; thus, the saying 'has the cat got your tongue?' became slang for 'are you afraid to tell?'

Elephants are the largest land mammals on earth and have quite the memory to go along with their massive size. While the old saying "An elephant never forgets" may be exaggerated, it's more true than not. An elephant's memory is key to its survival and, sometimes, its herd's. Herds have a matriarchal structure with one older female in charge. These dominant females have developed a bank of knowledge over the years that helps their herd survive in the wild. Time and distance don't impact their ability to lead their herd to the right place, demonstrating their superb memory.

The California State Flag, also known unofficially as the “Bear Flag,” is the oldest unofficial State Symbol. Though it came into existence during the short-lived Bear Flag Revolt in the spring of 1846, it was not officially adopted as California’s official State Flag until 1911. Its full design and color scheme were not settled upon by the Legislature until 1953. The final flag design was adopted from the now lost Bear Flag, employing a red star in the upper left corner and a red stripe at the bottom. Above the stripe is the legend “California Republic.” The image of a bear, the California grizzly bear that is emblazoned in the center, was inspired by a nineteenth-century painting by California artist Charles Nahl.

Long John Silver, the star of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, was the first major fictional pirate character to walk around with a pet parrot, but this was based on real truths. The reason why the parrot became associated with pirates is that sailors could easily buy them in many Caribbean ports. Some were kept, but most were sold when the ship reached home. They were colorful, they could be taught to talk—always entertaining—and they fetched a good price in the bird markets of London.

The Ferrari logo and the Porsche logo both feature the same black prancing horse, prompting many to ask: Why are the Ferrari and Porsche logos similar? Ferrari’s symbol can be traced to the Italian fighter ace Francesco Baracca who painted the black prancing horse onto the fuselage of his plane. In 1923, a car-loving Italian from Modena called Enzo Ferrari met the mother and father of Baracca. Baracca’s mother told Ferrari to paint the prancing horse on his cars as it would give him good luck. The horse on the Porsche logo, which was taken from Stuttgart’s Coat of Arms, represents the stud farm (a term for a horse-breeding farm, so “stud farm” in German is Stuttgart or Stuotgarten) on which the city was built.

However, rather than rejecting the label, Jackson was amused by it and included an image of the animal in his campaign posters.
