Aretha Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, and started singing gospel as a kid at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was a preacher. She began her music career as a recording artist for Columbia Records when she was 18 years old. Franklin's first No 1 hit was “Respect”. The song was originally written and recorded by Otis Redding in 1965, but Franklin's version became an anthem for the feminist and civil rights movements of the 1960s. It remained a staple of her live performances throughout her career.

Frank Sinatra had plenty of influence on music — as well as cartoons about talking dogs. Sinatra’s popularity may have waned somewhat in the 1960s but he had a major comeback hit in 1966. Scooby-Doo was not originally going to be the star character of the cartoon that became "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?". Fred Silverman, a television executive, envisioned the show as an amalgamation of various sources. Silverman’s idea for the show changed somewhat while he was listening to music during a flight. He heard Frank Sinatra’s hit “Strangers in the Night.” Near the end of the song, Sinatra sings the nonsense phrase “dooby dooby doo.” Silverman misheard the phrase as “scooby dooby doo.” After that, he decided to name the show Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? and centered the show around its canine character.

Few songs reel you in quite as confidently as Gloria Gaynor's 1978 disco masterpiece I Will Survive. Though Gaynor scored other hits during the disco era, most notably with her driving 1974 cover of the Jackson 5's Never Can Say Goodbye, I Will Survive has become her undeniable signature song. When Gaynor sings "at first I was afraid, I was petrified" after a melodramatic piano flourish, it's incredibly evocative but also slightly misleading. Because a few bars later, Gaynor reveals the song's true message is not one of fear, but of strength, empowerment and resilience.

While the song “Georgia On My Mind” had been around for thirty years when Ray Charles — at the suggestion of his driver — learned the words and recorded it in 1960, it wasn’t until the piano man sang the tune that it became a hit and the official Georgia state song. On March 7, 1979, “Georgia On My Mind” became Georgia’s state song. To celebrate the moment, Charles was invited to perform it for state legislators, their wives, and children at the state capital building in Atlanta.

It’s been more than 60 years since the Ronettes released “Be My Baby” in August 1963. The 2-minute, 39-second epic was crafted by an unlikely group of young artists, most of them barely out of their teens but already working at the peak of their powers. Ronnie Spector’s lead vocal on “Be My Baby” signaled a distinct break from every girl group record that came before, not only in the sheer power of her performance but also in her nuanced reading of the record’s slyly subversive lyrics. While most earlier girl group songs voiced the concerns of a young woman worried about getting and keeping a boyfriend, the lead singer of “Be My Baby” doesn’t seem the least bit shy about setting her own romantic agenda.

On December 8, 1965, “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & The Papas was released. Inspired by a frigid New York City winter and a nagging homesickness for the warmth of Southern California, the song was written by John and Michelle Phillips. During a freezing cold winter in 1963, John would write music through the night. One evening, when Michelle was in a deep dream state, he woke her up to play the first verse of the song inspired by her homesickness (“All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey/I’ve been for a walk/On a winter’s day/I’d be safe and warm/If I was in L.A.”)

"Vienna" is a song from Billy Joel's 1977 album The Stranger, released as the B-side to his "Just the Way You Are" single. Lyrically, Joel was inspired by visiting the city of Vienna and his father, who left the family when Joel was a child. Joel has stated that "Vienna" is a metaphor for old age but also may have been subconsciously about his father. He also said: "We treat old people in this country pretty badly. We put them in rest homes, we kinda kick them under the rug and make believe they don’t exist. They [the people in Vienna] don’t feel like that. In a lot of these older places in the world, they value their older people and their older people feel they can still be a part of the community, and I thought 'This is a terrific idea' – that old people are useful – and that means I don’t have to worry so much about getting old because I can still have a use in this world in my old age. I thought 'Vienna waits for you…'"
